2008 XC90 Introduction

Greetings All,

Happy to be a first-time Volvo owner! Just picked up our 2008 XC90 4.4L V8, AWD, 98,000 miles last night and are pleased so far.

I've done a cursory amount of research prior to purchasing the car and will now start digging deeper to learn of all of the little nuances to be aware of. I am able to do some work on the car, however given the fact that we bought it at a good price I'm considering the purchase of a 5-year extended warranty to protect against major mechanical failures.

From a quick scan on the board, there seem to be transmission issues however I haven't determined in my limited research if that's applicable to our car. I'll search more before asking a bunch of questions.

My "fun" car is a 2002 Camaro SS converted to track car. I'm an active user on LS1TECH.com so I already have an appreciation for the wealth of knowledge these sites can provide access to. For those that know these cars inside-and-out and take the time to post on the forum, thank you!

Hi there, nice choice on the model trim of the car, I have one in sport model of the same year really great and have not had any problems now with 122k on the clock, I hope yours serves you well into the future years and good luck

Thanks for the warm welcome. We're hoping for the same experience of trouble free driving. It's nice to see the loyal history of Volvo ownership in your (and many others') signature.

We're coming from a Mazda CX-7. The turbo 2.3L mated with that chassis handled well and had enough giddy-up for our liking, however I'm convinced that car had a gremlin inside. Thanks to timing chain, VVT, turbo failure, A/C condenser, headlight ballasts, charging system issues, etc. on a low mileage car, we just gave up and went with a car with a reputation of being reliable (and extremely safe). With poor customer service to go along with the mechanical disappointment, we're done with Mazda for good.

Already learning about little quirks:

Someone has already hit the car in the passenger rear so I went in to change the back up light bulbs. Noticed that only the left rear fog light worked. Bought another bulb for the right, pulled the cover off and found that it was only a reflector on that side. Did a little research and this was by design due to variance in regulations between Europe and the US DOT. Learning something new every day.
