'99 S70 Front Suspension Redo
I am gearing up to redo the front suspension on the S70. I think I'm going all in and doing inner tie rod ends as well as outers. There are two versions of the inner tie rod ends. One is supposed to be able to distinguish between the two by verifying the manufacturer of the steering rack and checking to see whether the rack has a "4" or "5" on the "service plate." I just ordered both styles of inner and will return the ones I don't use, but can anybody provide advice on locating any markings on the rack to verify manufacturer or to locate the "service plate" and the number that is supposed to be stamped into it? Thanks

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

IPD covers this pretty well: http://www.ipdusa.com/products/5802/113 ... 8-2004-c70
One easy way to distinguish between the TRW and the SMI racks is to look at the tie rods on the car. If they are original and say TRW on them, well then you know what you have. Same with the dust boots which are perhaps more likely to be original - look for the TRW logo. The TRW rack is more common, worth a look.
You can also tell by the shape of the cover on the main steering gear casing, I don't remember those details may have it on the computer at home.

I seem to recall there is a molded brand name on the underside and to the rear of the steering rack. You have to view it from underneath and looking up at the back of the rack near the steering column join if I remember correctly. It may be covered in gunge so clean it off. I looked on our 98 XC a couple of years ago to check and recall it being difficult to see. I'm also sure I read where to look on line somewhere, but can't recall, it may have been on MVS. The chassis plate will tell you what was originally fitted, but it may not be what is on there after all this time.
Good luck!
