1998 V70 XC FPR or Fuel Pump

Post by superfeed »

Good People,

My 98 V70 XC doesn't want to stay running. I've read a lot about access to the Fuel Pump and need to fix the sending unit anyway, but I was wondering about the FPR as the car sat for a long period (a couple of years), and when I pulled the fitting off the output side of the new filter I installed last year, it pumped like crazy. There seems to be no pressure at the rail.

Question: Is the fuel pump working but unable to sustain pressure against the manifold a likely failure mode?

I did replace the plastic vacuum tee with a soldered metal one that Volvo now makes, and when the failure occurred I noticed that the rubber elbow for the hard vacuum line at the intake manifold had failed (I replaced it).

I pulled the Fuel Pressure Regulator out of the little plastic cup and sprayed some carb cleaner in there and pulled a vacuum with a mighty-vac on the vacuum side while spraying the cleaner down the center stem. I didn't see any fluid going through the thing even with a vacuum pulled on it. That is what makes me think the FPR may be bad. Well..., that and not wanting to screw with the pump if I don't have to. :)

Thanks!

John Gregory,

Did you get a chance to measure the fuel pressure at the manifold? If so, what did you get?
If I recall correctly there is also a Schrader valve after the fuel pump near the fuel filter -- that would be worth checking too to see locate where the pressure drop is occurring.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

Thanks, I'll pick up a pressure gage and check it out.
