Documenting Some 98 v70 glt maintenance

For anyone interested, I'll be showing some of the fun maintenance things I've been doing on my beater of a v70. I'm calling it Stage -0.5, because this old car needed/needs a lot of love. Like my other thread (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=69081) which started as a head gasket failure scare and ended with entire vacuum and coolant hoses rehab, this thread will be picture-heavy because pictures are cool.

Thanks to a chance encounter with member rspi here in Little Rock, I heard there was a driver seat nearby...


this picture was me trying to capture how dirty this seat was while cleaning it with some turtlewax brand leather cleaning stuff


I didn't realize until I had it home and cleaned up, that it is not the same shade of beige as my other seats. but it sure does look better, and not that noticeable while in the car

this will serve as the "before" photo of the carpet...it was starting to grow things. After about a year or more of having a driver door that doesn't seal, and in fact has a 1/2 inch gap because of a chance encounter with a huge 8-point buck. Door to be replaced this week

this is why i'm switching to rails plus cross bars soon..


the nice thing about wagons is that they can serve as their own shop while being serviced


potential frankensteining of seat to follow? the "new" seat's back-tilt controls don't work and it makes a rather unpleaseant sound while moving front-back. I also managed to destroy one of the threaded bolt holes for the driver seat mount...

Looks like the rails went to a good home.
Try to use the front pieces and save yours, if they are in good shape.
I have switches and motors, if you want to try and fix the seats.

@obayha: not sure when I'll put the rails on, but within the next month or so. I have to source some yakima rail grabber things before I go for it. Also, I've removed the flaky coating stuff from one of the pieces of trim you sent me, with the intention of painting it. When I get around to that I'll be sure to post it

The junk yard car is a slightly lighter shade than mine... oh well. still should be way better than the old door. Still working on getting the alignment just right. Today I learned that removing car doors is far easier than installing....

Fun tip though if you want to remove a door by sliding the pins off the hinge, and you don't have an external torx bit of that size (like most people). A 1/4" bit driver fits very snugly on it, and the ones I dealt with weren't very tight and it came right off

My hood and bumper had been replaced with a different tone also. It is the new style.
Make sure you strip the old door of parts. How did you door stop look? That is a weak area and usually fails somewhere down the road.
The Yakima rail grabbers work great. Just hauled two kayaks and a Thule loaded, on the top of my 06 with no problems. The side rail will hold a load.
With cooler weather coming this weekend, I have instructed to remove parts from the '98 so it can be removed from the back yard.

I'll be following this thread! Looks like it's coming along well so far! I just wish my cousin would take out the seats and deep clean the carpet in his S70. He still has antifreeze on the carpet under the seats from his heater core leak.

@obayha: nice! I have regretfully not been on the water as much as I should this year. And still haven't bought a kayak like I had planned to. Been sinking money straight into the kayak hauler (my car) for the past 6 months haha. I've hauled three kayaks on the current yakima cross bars a few times with no issues, I just like the look of the rails and it seems more secure to attach bars to rails. Plus they don't warp the door seal like you see in the picture above.

@bmdubya1198: Thanks! taking the seats out really isn't hard and boy does it feel good to know your carpet is perfectly clean in all those otherwise impossible to reach places

Continued the struggle today with getting the door lined up where it will seal. Still not quite there! I just can't seem to get it up high enough. Still needs about 1 cm straight up and it will be great.

I did accomplish swapping the door handle from the old door so I can lock it again.

It might be a while before you see any updates as the next couple of weeks are very busy. Hoping to install control arms next Tuesday. Overall, I am very pleased with the way things are going with the ol' silver bullet Cheers!

Quick update:

Didn't have much time to work on the car the past couple weeks. But finally got new Lemforder control arms and ipd swaybar links on. Not a terrible job if you know what you're doing, but this was my first and fumbled my way through it.

This is the only picture i got of the old driver's side ball joint...and this was the 'better' one :/


Didn't get any pics of either side completely done, but whatever. Torqued everything to Haynes for control arm hardware (37ft-lb for ball joint, 48 then 120 degrees for subframe) and IPD's instructions for their endlinks (45 ft-lb).

Cleaned another wheel. Ran out of elbow grease at the final state you see it in:





Now: I took it for a road test and I'm getting an unpleasant sound coming from I believe the driver's side front rotor. A similar occurrence happened after I did my brakes last summer, but my mechanic recommended replacing that wheel hub assembly, which I had him do. That fixed that issue but now this has happened. I know my tie rods have to happen next but I'm wondering if that has anything to do with this?

Check and see if your dust shield is rubbing against the rotor.
