2004 s80 2.5t AWD Looking for correct MAF sensor

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 s80 2.5t AWD Looking for correct MAF sensor

Post by volvobro »

Hello,

Just want to say first that this forum is awesome. I've actually been lurking on here for a few months now and this forum has helped me substantially with the many repairs I've had to do to my first Volvo s80 (also my first car).
Even though there isn't much information about my specific s80 car model, this forum has nevertheless been very helpful.

Anyway, on to my issue.

I've been looking for a new MAF sensor, but I'm not too sure which is the correct part I'm looking for. I've already decided to go for another Bosch MAF (not trying to cheap out on this as I've heard bad things about other brands), but each website that I've visited has given me 2 different part numbers, so it's kinda confusing the hell out of me. Some websites even said that the current MAF part I have on my car is incorrect. Maybe that's why it failed?

Anyhoo, my current MAF part number (Bosch) is 0280218108 followed by 8670112. The MAF part number that I'm looking for is either this one, or it's an MAF with part number 0290218088. This other MAF part number is according to eEuroparts (both parts can be found here 0280218088 & 0280218108), and IPDusa.

Also worth mentioning that I'm in Canada and I'm trying to find a vendor that is waiving the brokerage and duty fees so I don't have to pay an extra 50% on shipping.

There's also CarParts.com, which has given me W0133-1805219. This doesn't even make sense to me as the part number on my current MAF has different numbers entirely.

Can someone please enlighten me? Have I been driving with the wrong MAF for 6 months? God knows how long the dude who I bought the car off has had it for.

Also, if anyone knows any other vendors where I can get some prices, that would be extremely helpful!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I cannot for the life of me remove my current MAF. If I didn't know any better I would guess the previous owner used superglue to keep that sucker on. I read somewhere that you can heat up the joining pieces to get them out, or instead of replacing the entire MAF you can just replace the little 5-prong sensor with the torx security bits. Thoughts?

Regarding correct part, I would go to Tasca or similar authorized Volvo part seller and check if the discrepancy in numbers is due to part updates. The part W0133 may be a third part supplier - not Bosch.

As to removal, are you talking the tube separation - if so try putting a tad of PB Blaster or equivalent and let it work around - then pull and it will separate. Make sure you clean well prior to reinstall. If you are talking about the actual sensor, held on by two security torx screws - after removal it should just pull out.

Usually the replacement part is the entire unit - tube part included. If not then prior to ordering you will have to use some muscle and see if you can get it out without damage. If you do damage it just buy the entire part.

Correct MAF Bosch number for a 2.5T is 0280 218 088.

The torx required was a 5 sided security torx however between 2004 and 2006 they changed (again) to a weird looking 2 sided security torx. I was working on a 2006 XC70 the other day and was going to snap a picture......never got around to it.

I would just Dremel a slot into the head and get it out then use anything with the same pitch/guage of thread.

Thanks a lot for the reply guys. I called my local Volvo dealer and gave them my VIN just to double check the correct part, and it indeed was 0280 218 088.

Luckily, I managed to obtain a used MAF (for only $60) from a Volvo specialist with the correct part number and it worked like a charm. He even replaced it for me! He removed the previous MAF with such ease it made my jaw drop. All he did was pull and twist and it came off almost immediately... made me look like a wimp!
Best news is I am no longer getting the annoying bad ETM symptoms, yay!

I guess the MAF with part number 0280 218 108 was causing the problems, as my throttle body is apparently brand new.

Again, thanks for the help!
