I believe the axle on my '93 850 which I replaced several years ago had a thin ring designed to be dimpled into a slot in the axle to lock it in place. The 31 mm nut included with the after market replacement axle I just installed on a 96 850 doesn't have that. The current one is on the driver's side, so forward rotation of the hub will be in the "unthreading" direction of the nut, with only the torqued tightness to hold it.
Is the included nut the right one to use?
96 850 Should axle nut have lock ring?

No lock rings on the P80 axle nuts, I have done at least a dozen 95+ ones.
