Good Morning Guys,

My car wont shift, I was cruising down I95 a couple nights ago, when a mustang abruptly cut me off. So, obviously, I had to catch up to him and show him what my 20 y/o 3000lbs of Swedish engineering could do. Upon gracefully passing him at 70 mph, I hit the clutch (not sure if it made it to the floor) and revved my engine. Upon taking my exit ramp a few miles later, I found it very hard to shift back to fourth. Also, at a complete stop, in neutral, you can feel the entire car vibrate. Ese es no buena.

I come to you from after a night gloom, researching clutches whilst the moon ominously shined into my room foreshadowing my inevitable doom: my clutch needs to come out.

As you can see, she's a beaut. At night, my dirty old volvo illuminates Maryland's foggy roads in a manner similar to foreign spaceship. This seems wonderful, however, I should have listened as Taylor Swift played in my car, reminding me that "haters gonna hate, hate, hate...". Nonetheless... now I may have revved my engine 3 or 24 too many times and now I have problems:

So, I can still shift, but it takes a man to switch into first. Once I get going, it upshifts and downshifts pretty well (it's still noticeably rough) however, reverse is not an option unless I turn the car off, switch it and then start it with the clutch down.

My research tells me it could be linkage, cylinders/fluid, etc... but my gut tells me it's the clutch.

So, my car... my service records are attached in PDF form if that helps. I got her at around 250miles (Im assuming, broken Odometer) The original owners got a new transmission when it hit 150miles. She has 300miles now... So, even if this the 2nd clutch, ya know... it's about time.

Others: I smell exhaust in the cabin when I cutoff the A/C and sit at a light. (My mechanic said I have an oil leak somewhere, not the rear main seal though) I check my fuel rail for lose hoses to no avail...
If I need to pay someone to pull the engine, it shouldnt cost much more to get it totally rebuilt, right?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to tackle this myself, hopefully... I've made it this far with this car, so this is the next step to my ASE certification, lol. If anyone works on Volvos or knows someone in Maryland or in PA that does, let me know. Im at a point where I might pay someone on here to do it rather than these mechanics who don't know an EGR valve from a EGR vacuum controller.

There is no linkage on the clutch, it is hydraulic. Check your brake fluid level and you can try to bleed it. I had to change one after about 235k miles after the throwout bearing went bad and ate the fingers off of the pressure plate.

Rather than trying to mash it into 1st at a stop light I just turned the car off, put it in first and then used the starter to restart it in gear to get home. I was several hundred miles away from home when it quit disengaging. You obviously don't want to do that for weeks on end.

You can change the clutch from the bottom without pulling the engine but it isn't a picnic either way you do it. Even though the RMS is OK I would change it why you are there. The part is pretty cheap but the labor is intensive.

Would I want a new clutch kit, or just a plate.

I ask because I tend to slip the clutch a lot and am considering a performance clutch, or one with better friction, if the flywheel should be replaced too... im really dreading this, andd if I end up doing it, I want the engine to go before the clutch. In which case I could buy another 850 wagon and transfer over eventually. ..

Learn how to properly drive a manual or stay with auto. Slip is what cause wear, slip a lot will kill a clutch in a hurry.

You want the rear main seal (buy Volvo seal only), pressure plate, clutch, throw-out bearing and resurface the flywheel, at minimal.

Performance clutch? Just get an R clutch.

The costs of labour of removing the engine have no bearing  on the cost of a rebuild - they just add up.

Thanks for the advice, ironically... when I look up "how to drive a clutch properly" the first video on youtube has a guy literally kicking it into gear using a performance clutch... lol. Even though... a stage 3 clutch sounds sexy to me still, I can see how they might make city traffic even more hell. Therefore I shall take your advice and go with the 850R for half the price! (thanks for the link)

I've gotten a lot of quotes and you are correct. I guess I was hoping someone would give me a break if I threw enough money at them...

Thanks a lot for all your help.

I'm getting a new RMS, Throw-out Bearing, Clutch, Plate
I read I should replace the slave cylinder... Is that a prudent replacement as well? If there's anything else I should do, lemme know. This car has 300k and I want to go another 300k if at all possible, lol

On a '94 the slave cylinder should be external and if it does fail it really isn't a big deal to change it. The one where it makes sense to replace the slave even if it is good is if it is internal. On that one a leak forces you to remove the transmission again.
