Hey all,
When I start the car about 2 seconds later it turns of - but its not a stall its a slow wind down so I am 99% sure its the immobiliser. Further to this, it doesn't start again after the first try - I have to wait 5 minutes to start it again. I read in the manual that this is the immobiliser.
I have tried both keys, and neither one works - which makes me think its probably not an issue with the ring antenna although I checked that anyway and it looks ok (no frayed wires or contacts).
Prior to this happening, I had the battery out for 1.5 days - could having the battery out reset the code in the immobiliser? Do I have to somehow reprogram the immobiliser? Is there anyway to bypass or remove it all together?
Thanks. My engine seems to be working fine now, but since I removed the battery the immobiliser is causing me grief. Thanks in advance.

I think the immobiliser shut off is quick and you've got something else wrong. Try unplugging you MAF perhaps?

A bad immobilizer communication error will set a P code, P1670 I believe, so that can be read with a standard scanner. The typical behavior of the car is to start and die within about 1 second or even a bit less. The difference between one second and two seconds is splitting hairs but it is significant.

I had similar, but not exactly the same issue. I had where the car would crank but not start, fuel pump wasn't firing up (no whistle sound). A quick look with the fault code reader showed up a fault.
I had P1081 with my 99 V70, it turned out to be the ring around the ignition barrel, after swapping that (with battery disconnected), the car has never been a problem again.
Just in case, I have changed the fuel pump relay (which I guess was about due anyway with the age of the car), but the car was showing no symptoms after swapping the ring.

Im guessing the 1999 in EU did not come with ME7. This will not work with a 1999 North America car.

a) Some 1999 EU models came with ME7, those that didn't came with a Denso or MSA EMS.abscate wrote:Im guessing the 1999 in EU did not come with ME7. This will not work with a 1999 North America car.
b) Yes it will work with a 1999 US model. There is no functional difference between a US or EU/CA/NOR/... immobilizer for this model year.

I've read here many times with ME7 that if you don't marry components in VIDA replacement will not work. I am not an expert here.

The antenna ring doesn't have to be married to the car. It's the same part used from 1997-2005 for any X70 car with an immobilizer. More often than not the fault is related the the connection between antenna ring and wiring harness. So a simple "remove and reinstall" can sometimes help get rid of the problem.
