I am in the process of installing a timing belt in a 96 Volvo 850. I have the marks on the cam gears lined up with the marks on the timing belt top cover. However, as I look a the crank pulley, the mark on it is off by a full inch. The mark on the crank pulley is a full inch to the right of the line that it is supposed to line up with. Said another way the mark on the pulley lines up perfectly with the belt. The mark on the pulley is 1 inch clockwise (to the right) of where I believe it is supposed to be. This is obviously way off.

I have owned this car for about 5000 miles and it has run perfectly. The prior owner never had the belt changed so I am putting in timing belt kit before I sell the car to a friend. Part of me says leave the crank position alone - the car runs great - don't risk changing it. That said, it can't be correct in it's current position.

Any constructive input would be appreciated.

Look for the mark on the CRANK sprocket, not on the harmonic balancer.

You are looking for a mark (or marks) that look like one of these:

Zoom in on the pictures. The marks are quite small

What they said. It's hard to see down there but you have to. I usually use my phone and take a few photos because I can't see that far. This video shows it at 8:23.

After you MAKE SURE the crank mark it on, you may find that one of your cams are (has been) off 1 tooth. Found the crank off on my daughters car (my bad, I did it) 1 tooth.

Put a little white out on the crankshaft sprocket. I couldn't see the little notch in the sprocket valley until I put a dab of whiteout on it.

Invest in a Endoscope/Borescope. Even a cheap $6.00 unit off eBay makes a work of difference.
