2001 XC-70 oil spewing

Post by aharrismusic »

This site has helped me with many things, this car has finally won and I'm ready to trade unless someone can help me find a definitive point of attack.

216000 miles, driven everyday day. Pulled up to the grocery store yesterday and oil was spewing from the front passenger side, there was a massive puddle by the time I got out of the store, I've never seen this happen in any of my cars. Filled it back up, got it home and let it cool. Lifted it this morning and I have been staring puzzled for hours, cleaned it, can find a point of leak anywhere.

No smoke, oil residue on the back windshield, and stinks. Nothing on the top end, but there is oil everywhere underneath, inside the wheel wells, all down the underside, and I can't see anything.

Please tell me someone else has had this happen and can get me to a starting point.

Sounds like you have blown a front cam seal or possibly the crank seal

As above, remove the upper engine plastic cover then the upper timing belt cover and have a look inside. Perhaps the PCV is clogged.

I just had the front cam seal on a 2002 v70xc blow. Bought the car a month ago, blew on the highway. Sounds exactly like what happened to mine. Total repair bill was $1041 for cam seal, timing belt, water pump, pullies, tensioner and serpentine belt. $450 of it was parts.

Also, my pcv is not clogged, so I'm not sure if there was some other cause, but it may have just gone bad. We were hauling a lot of camping gear through the mountains though...

Price is not that bad.

PCV is ill in your car for sure, seals don't blow out themselves. The biggest problem in this PCV is a long tube running from oil separator to PTC nipple, it is responsible for redirecting vapors to a place where vacuum exists when engine is under boost.

Unless you really neglect oil changes the 1999 on PCV systems clog much less than the earlier ones. Here's mine at 170k, never been cleaned, less than 5% blockage
