Tailgate Open Warning......

Post by Smith »

So the past couple weeks while I'm driving I noticed the tailgate open warning on my dash lighting up and then going off. I parked my car at work the other day came out and the battery was dead. I believe the dash signal indicated the tailgate was open so the little light in the trunk area stayed on and drain my battery. Where should I start looking to fix this problem? Thanks.

As JRL suggests, it could be the little micro switch on the latch. If that isn't the problem, get ready to do this:

Do you have a pic of this micro switch so I know what I'm looking? Thanks.

The switch is attached right to the latch. You have to remove the tailgate inner panel to access it. I can't remember all the little tricks and traps to release the panel without damaging anything, but there are discussions out on the web about how to do it. Patients is rewarded.

If you find the latch switch to be OK and you decide to extract the harness from the D-pillar to inspect for damage, you must remove the inner trim panel there also. I think you have to remove the speaker.

The tailgate wire harness failure is fairly common - not so related to mileage, but more related to how often one visits the grocery store. Good luck!
