I have an 850 whose driver seat is cracking and deteriorating. I'm thinking of going to a junk yard to look for a replacement (or just the leather), but 850s are kind of rare these days. On the other hand S70s are plentiful, but I don't know if their seat will be compatible or not. I mean I assume if just pull the leather then it probably might, but just want to make sure. Thanks.

They are "somewhat" interchangeable under model year 2000. They bolt in exactly the same but the seat belt anchor is different and the SRS will be different.

You can either take the seat and the seat belt altogether (with the SRS belt tightener) and swap over everything. The other option is to modify the seat belt anchor on the seat and use your existing seat belt. Details are in this thread from the repair database:

Your '94 has no SIPS bag and the 70 series seats will have SIPS. On a '98 the SIPS is triggered by a sensor that is on the seat, it is not electronically controlled. If you install a '98 seat you will have SIPS.

The '99 and '00 versions have electronically triggered SIPS and that will not be operative with your '94 but then again you don't have it anyway so you aren't losing any protection.

If you do change the seat belts out be sure to remove a battery lead before you do anything related to the seat belts or you will trigger an SRS fault.

I put '99 70 series seats in my '97 850. Here's my post/experience.

I did swap the seat (foam & leather) from the '99 on to the base/track/mount of the '97. I found that to be less frustrating than swapping seat skins.

I went to the junk yard today but couldn't find anything remotely presentable. They have a couple of 98/99 S70 but the condition of the seats is much worse than mine. Same with the 850. Seems like the only option is to reupholster with new leather etc. It probably will cost a lot though, more than I'd be willing to spend on the car.

What is your location?

I have seen many decent driver's (and of course passenger's) seats in junkyards up in Minneapolis, even in a couple p80 cars that went to the junkyard here in the small city where I live. Anyway the point is, maybe someone relatively close to you could help you find a better one.

I'm in Northern California. I went to the one called picknpull in Newark as that seems to have the most cars of those model, but the seats all look pretty bad. I don't know if there are others around here.
