2004 S80 2.5T Ballast replacement issues

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 S80 2.5T Ballast replacement issues

Post by shmizoke »

Driver headlight flickers and sometimes goes out. Decided to replace the ballast. Got one on eBay and took it to the mechanic, who tells me it's the wrong part.

The one I bought is a 4pin LAD5GL looks like this:

This is the actual bad one currently in the vehicle - 4pin LAD5GL:

As you can see in the photos, the original and the one I bought look nearly identical except for a pesky connecting line, which he says makes it not fit.

This is the heatsink, which the mechanic says has to fit flush against the ballast:

I can see what he's saying about it not lining up and not fitting flush - I mentioned the thermal compound could be the issue but he said it was solid and he couldn't dig into it.

The mechanic says the VOLVO part number is 30727202. When I search for that part number all the pictures I can find look exactly like the one I bought. The only ones I can find that look like the one currently in my vehicle are older ('04-'06) used ones. I called Valeo tech support and they told me the one I bought is correct and it should fit.

The mechanic showed me the part from the dealership is nearly $400 and they don't provide a picture. He says he called the dealership and they told him the part I got is only for S60's and XC90s and right-side steering S80s but all the data online shows the 4pin LAD5GL should fit no problems. Does anyone have any experience with this or advice to offer?
