Car runs fine when I start it up. As I drive it, the temperature gauge starts rising to the middle position. Once the car reaches that medium temperature position, the gauge freezes in place and a little yellow triangular caution warning lights up on my dash.
I have coolant in my reservoir, so I don't think my car is overheating (I hope it's not!), but I'm hesitant to drive it.
Now, after the light came on today, I was gliding around at about 45 mph without revving the engine much. The caution light turned off after a few minutes of this easy driving. However, when I turned the AC on, the light came back on almost immediately. The temperature gauge was frozen this whole time at the middle position.
P.S. Can anyone steer a 2002~ volvo s60 with 1 hand, palm open (Where you push on the wheel with 1 flat palm while turning the wheel)? Because I am unable to - the wheel is too difficult to turn. If this is an uncommon amount of resistance, I'll get the power steering fluid replaced. But if no one can steer the 2002~ s60 with one hand, I'll chalk it up to just rough steering with the model.

The temperature gauges on most Volvo's are not super sensitive to changes in temperature but if the coolant was to become excessively hot you would then see the gauge rapidly rise into the red zone.
i.e. the normal or mid range band is quite wide.
You may possibly have an issue with your temp' sensor but one would expect to hear the radiator fan starting up more frequently than normal.

I also have a 2002 s60, although I am not the primary driver of the car, when I did drive it recently the steering seemed hard compared to my 2006 xc70. I had it checked by a mechanic and they could not find any problems. So, I suspect the steering issue may be normal.
