So recently I had to replace my fuel pump. It stared with the gas gauge failing were it would always show empty. Then about 2 weeks later my fuel pump went out. Replaced the pump with a volvo pump. After that the gas gauged worked but would not show a full tank when filled . It was one click below 18 on the gauge. Then a few days later it started throwing a P0440 code. I've cleared that code a couple of times. Now it's been about 3 weeks since the replacement and the gas gauge again is no longer working. The fuel light will go on when gas is getting low so I know when I'm getting empty aside from just using the tripometer. Any ideas at this point would be appreciated.

Gauge isn't working at all, e.g. not showing any reading?
Or is it off by a couple of litres?
If it's just off you can have it adjusted by getting the cluster reprogrammed.
Not reading at all indicates a wiring issue.

You know there are 2 fuel pumps on your car? Both have level sensors:

The link shows the tank layout for a 98 AWD.
I've attached a picture of my fuel tank viewed from the front of the car where you can see both pumps. Both have level sensors and I believe the 'average' the levels in the 2 halves. The LH pump pumps the fuel to the RH side but has a level sensor in it too.

I did not know that. I have heard people say there are 2 sending units and was wondering about that but not actual pumps. I wonder how you would figure out which pump would go out , I guess when your out of gas at half a tank? So maybe the other sending unit is out. That bites. Price is good though for an OEM right side pump I paid $450. It looks like from the diagram that the left side might just be a sending unit and not a pump though, they call it an ejector and still expensive. Have to look into it. So I have to cut another hole in my floor, yeah , probably not gonna do it and just leave it. I have a life aside from fixing my Volvo. Crazy how this would happen. Thanks for the photo.

Where do you live? If you are in the US, try the on-line suppliers. I just bought the 2 pumps from Tascaparts. RH pump was just over $300 and Ejector was $340 + shipping.

Neil...you're careful job of documenting the AWD rear sub frame and fuel system just keeps getting more and more useful as these cars age...thanks again!

Before you buy anything check your connections. All electrical lines for the AWD fuel pumps is easily accessible from the inside. Measure resistance of the level senders, could be as simple as a disconnected wire.
Thanks guys. I'm going to check the sending unit resistance on the left hand side and see. From what I've read there is no pump on the left hand side just a sending unit and the ejsector part works on suction and the idea that liquid will seek it's own level keeping the fuel the same level on both sides and that there is only one electrical connection on that side. I noticed on my car that Volvo I assume used tie wraps on the pump connectors on the inside of the car I did not use them when I hooked up the new pump just plugged them in so I'm gonna do that to the connectors. Does anyone know the resistance I should be seeing on the sending unit , obviouly not in the mega ohms.
