The thread I link to below explains how I referenced the B4 servo piston by means of a 120mm pushrod referenced at 85mm with a scribe to allow proper measurement of the 3rd gear band friction material.

If you have a missing 3rd gear and you definitely are not suspecting a removed band clamp bolt this is how to repair the lost 3rd gear.
