2000 V70 XC overheating damage

Post by kahl »

I am looking at a 2000 v70 XC that has head damage due to radiator bursting causing over heating. The owner says the head gasket is leaking and the head needs serving. I think I am up to getting the head off and have it repaired. Is there anything I could check or be worried about in the lower part of the engine?

During the head repair I would do the PCV, all coolant hoses, heater core, timing belt and water pump.

This would be the fourth V70 that I got for less than $300.00 and brought back to life. The first three I did not have to go deep into the engine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Quick compression test.

If it will start, and there is no knocking I the bottom end, I think you should go for it,

I bought one that was similarly situated but it had destroyed cylinder walls and three broken pistons so it took a whole new engine to get it running.

A compression check will prevent the same mistake I made. With a blown head gasket you will get somewhat low compression on one or more cylinders but if any of them come back zero then the chances of damage below the head goes up substantially.

+1 on compression test. I just tried to revive a $300 Kia (I know-WHY? )80,30,0,30, pulled head, warped 30 thousandths plus, used other "junk" head I had (that's why)had milled, lapped valves etc, after assembly, runs okay, misses at idle, new numbers, 120, 75w130,80w130,135. Guess she smoked the rings. Let's see what rislone or marvel or someone can do.

Around here you can more than $300 for the car at the junkyard. Go for it!

thank you guys for the advice. After getting the melted plastic cover off the top of the engine #3 and #4 cylinders has "0" compression. I passed on this car. Never have seen the plastic cover melted on these engines. While doing the compression test with out the spark plugs there was little to no coasting of the engine when the starter stopped.

I don't like it when the fluid mixes, or I see melted plastic. That tells me that they kept trying to drive the car after it overheated. Bad bad bad.

I'd walk away from it fast unless I already had a good replacement engine of known history.
