What's the word on the Volvo factory skid plate/belly pan. Whats its purpose? Does it help or hinder cooling? Make the car more aerodynamic?

Is that a plastic one or the metal one? The metal ones are suppose to help prevent the oil pan from getting damaged. Good for if you plan to drive off paved roads much.

That's the plastic Volvo one. I also have a heavy duty (OMP?) steel skid plate that has saved my oil pan a time or two

Made In Japan bought one of the metal IPD versions and about a week later ran off the road and bent the crap out of it - with no damage to anything else. He was a believer.

Hey Lee- yes true and I have already purchased skid plates for my new Volvo's in our fleet- the first things I bought for these cars! The underbelly plastic crap is sitting in my shed. Btw, on an S40 the underbelly plastic piece covers up all kinds of things you should be keeping an eye on- for instance, I discovered a torn outer CV boot- this was not visible at all until the plastic came off. It is not only good insurance but helpful when keeping up with the state of your vehicle NOT to have that plastic piece there (which btw is a pain to take off and on for each oil change too)!! Btw, I have bought all of our skid plates from IPD. They are running a sale on them right now.

If you don't feel like putting it back every time, at least don't discard it.

Aside from keeping a piece of wood/metal that felt from the truck driving in front from damaging some power steering lines, it keeps ice and salt away from said piping and reduces rust progression.

In winter, I got wet snow on the belts, and the next morning everything was frozen when I came to start the engine.

I'd love to have one of these but never seen one on a car in Canada, and we could really do with them here. They keep the engine bay much cleaner and helps the engines warm up much quicker in the winter.

Can you still get these?

The Engine Splash Shield...
Since this is not a safety-critical component (unless you plan on using your car as a grader) you could craft your own splash shield out of cardboard  (just kidding)

Look at this ebay item:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Splash-S ... BX&vxp=mtr

Verify your part number at www.volvopartslisle.com to be certain
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Can't even find a picture of this other than that above, to try to find a part number.

Had a look on Vida, but what I think may be it has no ID tag so no part number. Anyone know what the number is?

Does anyone know if this came as standard in some markets so I know where to look? IPD part looks pointless as it has so many holes in it, it defeats the point of being a splash/dust shield. Sure would probably be a good oil pan defender though.

Problem her in Canada is shipping anything from US is stupid expensive, even if it were not a large item. IPD shipping is just nuts to Canada!
