2002 volvo v70 clicking sound when I start the car

Post by mountain73 »

The car has 145,000 miles on it, and it has recently began to have a little trouble starting the engine. When I turn the ignition key, there is a clicking sound and a return to a no start, after repeating a few times the car will eventually turn over, start, and drive like normal. Could this be a problem with the solenoid or battery?

First test turn key on and move shifter from park to lowest possible place about 20 times see if car starts then back to park or if it will start from neutral. The transmission range sensor (netural safety switch) is known to create starting issues.

Another possibility may be a failing starter the clicking may be the starter solenoid.
Before replacing the starter grab a friend pop the plastic cover off the starter solenoid and have someone try to start the car when its giving issues. If you have power on the little wire and a click with no start the starter is bad, If you have a clicking sound and no power to the starter little wire you have a possible range sensor issue.

Battery is first suspect - how old is it?

The neutral safety switch and the ignition switch are the next things to look at on old/high mileage cars.

excellent, I've always wondered why the car can't inform the driver that battery is not holding a charge, similar to the alternator error when it stops working. I would expect the car could know the battery isn't holding charge way before it gets to the clicking start point.... I've been there done that with my 02 V70 as well.

Yes, I've been developing a small upgrade to the ECM and DIM firmware that will inform the operator that the battery is old.

Caution: The code is Microsoft-based, so the DIM message will read:

"Battery is dieing...
Attempting START...
ARE YOU SURE?"

I like! Maybe while making it Microsoft based, get the driver to turn key to start to shut off again, works well in windows.... though shutoff is a "setting" now I suppose :)

No doubt you would turn the car off by selecting the START button, too.
