Axle Seal at Transmission, site of leak?

Post by mika »

I have had a leak and never could figure out where it was from.....was not sure if even oil or tranny fluid (though I do know the difference). Recently checked transmission fluid and it was low: it needs to be going somewhere. I looked at the axle seal (a place I never thought to look), and here is the picture. Anyway we can tell if seal is bad by looking at it?

Yes,

Wipe it clean, then spray small amount of Purple Power etc. let it soak for 30 sec. Then rinse with some water.
Then wipe it dry and observe the leak.

FYI, Corteco is the OEM seal, you can find it at rmeuropean dot com etc.

Check the little weep hole at the bottom of the bell housing to make sure it's not wet with oil and has a "washed clean" look right around it. If it's grimy--OK, but if it's as described, clean and dry it also and observe after a 30 min. drive.

If there is a drip anywhere, touch it with a clean paper towel to see if it has a red color like ATF.
