1994 850 - New rear shocks & mounts, same sounds

Post by firestarterpro »

I just replaced both rear shocks and mounts because I heard a loud clunking sound whenever I'd pull out of the driveway or go over a pot hole.

The sounds was coming from the rear/passenger side, so I assumed it was the mount. Replaced that first, still heard it, so I did both shocks and mounts.

I still hear it. I've ruled out tires being out of balance since it happens each time I leave the driveway. Im just not sure where else to check. Could it be the spring?

Mind you, this car is 270,000 miles old... any help would be appreciated.

If the clunk is loud, I would check the spring (it may break at any place from top to bottom) and for a broken real suspension arm. If the noise is not that loud, perhaps the handbrake cable is not well attached all along or the gas filler pipe got loose.

Trailing arm bushings and perhaps trailing arm mounts...or all four!

Here's a bad trailing arm bushing,

Does the 94 have a rear anti-sway bar? If so, check the bushings there also.

Good point! I had a look at Vida as I had more time, and I see there are no bushings on the 850 rear anti-sway bar. Long time since I was under one!

I'm with RussB. End links and/or bushings are the likely source of the noise.

they are talking about the rear passive trailing arm bushing and the insert endlink. At 270k, these are suspect. I have read a few DIY here on MVS, but it looks tedious. I drove an 850 with over 460k on the clock, and the rears were out, owner just kept driving as this is a crazy hard job to do IMO (noobie). You can check the status of the bushing by just looking at the rear without even removing wheel. If you lift the rear end, with wheels hanging, this will flex the passive suspension and you will see the condition of the aforementioned components easier.

Don't forget to use the rear jacking point (where the spare tire goes), with the hook attached. I have been using this as a jacking point and really like it. (need a big jack though)

Are these the same as 'delta links' on the later P80s?

There are lots of threads on delta links, and, yes, they are a pain to deal with.

MVS rents the delta link press out tool, although many have gotten them out with creative methods including burning them out with a torch.

(Mine crumbled and fell out of the car when I unbolted them...PTL...)
