2006 S60 engine hunting on idling

When I start my (S60) engine it (more often than not) starts hunting - similar to someone tapping on the accelerator. It does not always do it and it seems to be more so under load (when I put in in Drive). I do not notice anything whilst driving, except that sometimes I seem to have less power.
I checked the forum for the message "engine system service required" which appears on the display, but the engine decal light is also on. By pushing the trip meter reset button I get a code "042". What does all this mean and how can it be fixed?

Well, you're in the wrong forum, but as a cautious suggestion, I'd say the two are either unrelated, or if they are related, it's a weird one. Check all your cruise control components and the switch - I think a 042 is in connection with that system.

As for the power loss and rpm issues, it's hard to say anything without knowing more about your engine.

Who can give me some advice on 3 issues with my car please?
1. me engine is hunting in idle mode
2. have an error code 042 and would like to know what needs attention
3. my dash screen reeds "engine system service required"
