This post is just a heads-up to Volvo part number 272424. It is a kit that contains 24 valve stem seals.
The valve stem seals on these engines are a known failure point, and more and more people are replacing them either just because it is time or while doing head gasket jobs or other repairs. It has also become abundantly clear that most aftermarket valve stem seals are of dismal quality compared to the ones sold by Volvo, and fail quickly. The trouble is, the Volvo ones are something like three times as costly when bought individually. You need 20 seals to do a 5 cylinder white block head, currently they run about $6 each. The kit is priced at $75.
Updated: cost is not about $90 e.g. https://parts.volvocarslisle.com/p/volv ... 72424.html

Greetings. My local dealership seals this kit for $92.00 on line. Any thoughts or opinions on US Seals ? This is the brand that a WELL respected head rebuilder known to this sight uses ?

I just wouldn't mess with any other brand, even if it is what Clearwater or some other shop uses, unless I was absolutely certain. Many people have done this job, and then needed to do it again in less than a year due to leaking seals again. The OEM ones will last 15+ years, longer than almost any of us would ever need.

Greetings. I agree with your insight. Thanks. Also, thanks for refreshing my memory about Volvo Lisle site. Their prices are great. Their shipping for my parts list is better than my local pickup plus taxes.

Now I am curious as to the procedure to replace valve seals without removing head.

Yes, the lifters are on top of the valves which will need to come up to gain access to the seals. You can leave the cam sprockets on the cams. No need to pull the belt all the way off, just pull the tensioner and take the belt off the sprockets.cn90 wrote: So: is it necessary to remove the TB and sprockets?
Just paid $200 for a set of these seals. Box arrived today.

To clarify: These seals are not (and never were) $200 when you buy the complete set. That was a cost of buying separately instead of as a set. Currently $71 at the link above.

I can't imagine going through all that labour and then putting in a cheap rubber essential part.

Kind of like a rear main seal. I don't know why anyone would think it's a good idea to cheap out on something that takes so much work just to access.
