1998 S70 T5 M Fuel Guage

For the past 2 weeks my fuel gauge has been acting up. When I actually had about 6 gallons in the tank earlier this week the need would suddenly drop to E and when I looked at the miles to empty screen it just displayed 2 dashes. What I also find weird is that when it drops likes that the low fuel light doesn't turn on. Any thoughts? Is there a way I can test the sending unit?
