2005 xc70 haldex filter cover leaking

Post by mrscullini »

154k. recently replaced the aoc pump and filter. reused the existing stamped filter cover and replaced the o-ring. been driving for about 2 weeks without issue, maybe 600 miles. just noticed their is a leak from the haldex unit. it looks like it is coming from the filter cover. the screws are tight. it is a significant leak. there is 3x3 puddle on the garage floor in the morning and aoc fluid covering the underside of the car.

thought it might be the seal, but that is dry.

has anybody experienced this particular leak before?

New filter should have come with aluminum cover - discard the steel one. Always trouble.
I would refill, wipe it down and put car on lift or stands. Once running see where it leaks from.
If it looks like its coming from the filter cover that is where I would start

Please let us know as I don't see them leak often

Some possibles
Sometimes the corrosion from the steel cover to aluminum scratches the new seal going in.
Remove filter cover and filter and inspect sealing area

Driveshaft flange if removed can have a seal/leak issue

Pump can have a leak but rare.

Big o ring - Diff to Haldex can break if removed

thanks for the quick reply. it is definitely the filter cover. car running, aoc pump running, i can lay under there and watch it drip right from the bottom screw on the cover.

i'm in a bind and at least need the car to drive around town this coming week. i'm scheduled to leave town sunday morning. i won't be able to get this fixed before. my wife needs it to drive around town. if i pull the fuses from the rem, i can disable the dem and aoc pump. i'm thinking if the pump is not running, no pressure, should not be a leak. obviously, the awd is now disabled.

do you think this is risky and could cause further damage?

my awd was out earlier this year, aoc pump had died. while i was waiting for the new pump to arrive, i had pulled fuses 23 & 24 in the rem. this killed power to both the aoc pump and the dem.

i just pulled the same fuses, with the pump not running, the haldex is not pressurized and so far not leaking. definitely a constant drip with the pump running.

i'm thinking it will be ok to spin around town for a week until the new filter cover arrives and the aoc fluid.
