2005 XC90 : HVAC - Driver's Side Temperature

Post by aswgeer »

The driver's side blows either hot or cool air, regardless of where the temperature setting is at. The passenger side operates correctly. This problem occurs after I turn the temperature knob from either cold or warm to warm or cold, respectively. So for a few days I will be stuck with either hot or cold air and then it will magically fix itself and let me choose hot or cold air. This week, however, the problem occurred once again, yet it is not self-correcting.

After searching for hours on this site and others, I tried to temporarily fix it myself.

I am pretty sure the problem is the temperature damper motor not working properly. I located that part last night and manually opened/closed the lever(s) so that I could get cold air, rather than the heat it was blowing. Sure enough, by moving the levers that came from the damper motor, I had cool air again.

Do you think I have a bad temperature damper motor, or could something else be causing this? And if the temperature damper motor truly is the culprit, is this something that is really hard to replace? Any advice or comments would be really meaningful.

Thanks!
