99 V70 170hp Sudden engine vibration under acceleration

Post by BGA »

V70-99, 170hp, man. transm.
Car and engine was running nice in the evening. Next morning engine was vibrating hard under acceleration, but just under acceleration. No engine light has shown. This started less then a week ago. So far has only added a bottle of injector cleaner. What shall I more look for?
Car is with my daughter living 600 km away, so I havent driven it myself and been able to read OBD.
Seaching this and other Volvo forums gives engine mounts first thing to check. Second is injectors. Needs cleaning and checking connectors. But can these problems come suddenly, over night?

Thanks

It would be somewhat unusual for it to happen overnight but I have had bad inner CV joints cause horrible vibrations under acceleration. It gets worse above 50 MPH (80 KPH) and it gets worse with an additional load in the car, even just a passenger will make it worse.

A bad inner CV doesn't clack like a bad outer one does which makes it tougher to diagnose.

send her by Autozone or equivalent, get codes read, may be a pending or transient misfire code that isn't hard coding. Coils will cause misfires under load.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

As above misfire is likely. "Under load" means drive it like you're stealing it for afew blocks and the CEL will finally light giving away which cylinder's coil pack has failed when connected to a diagnostic device.

VVT failure can couse some unusual effects. I exeprience once that the enigne start to fibrate hard after start. What happened was the pulley on VVT become loose. Actually it starts but than when accelerating was vibrating.
Failure of the coil will make make rough ride continously.
