1998 xc-70 mystery part to me

I was chasing down a leak that seems to be coming from the engine side of the turbo return line. Yay me.
There is a seemingly aluminum box that sits directly behind the oil drain plug. It has a down turned front edge and a bunch of screws holding a bottom plate on it. What is it. I can take an image if needed.

I don't have experience on the AWD cars, but the Chilton manual shows a good picture of it on the suspension picture of the underside of a '98 V/R.

In Chilton picture, box sits just above bottom-of-pan level, and is oriented horizontally vs. oil cooler vertical placement. P/N label (was) on rear face of unit, almost looks like an Electrical control box of some sort.
'98 FWD turbo cars had oil cooler in radiator, and lines come off lower block, above this box. Dunno about AWD, can you reach in the space above and feel if there are lines attached to the top of the box?

Yes, it is horizontally mounted unlike the oil cooler. The oil cooler lines run to the opposite side of the engine at the lower corner - right where the flap is under the passenger tire. Electrical makes sense - as I remember it had regular screws holding the cover on. It could be some sort of 'junction box'. Never even thought of that, but it seems to make sense. Stole an image from the web. Different year, but same box.

I am not sure what they call it, or what it is actually for, I removed mine to do seals in the bevel gear, I am guessing it is for vibrations or something like that, it is quite heavy.

okay makes sense, a counterweight for the torque through the bevel gear.

I haven't taken it apart, I only removed from the bevel gear where it attaches with 3 bolts.

Next time I'm under there I'm tempted to take off that cover, but with my luck a million small ball bearings will cascade out and get lost in the gravel driveway.
