2002 S60 2.4t. tranny stops slipping with t stat removed

Post by Spinningcain »

Hi I have a 02 S60 2.4t with 130,000 miles on it. It has the shift flares pretty bad. I decided to change out the t stat and found out I apparently need to buy the entire housing. Anyway in the mean time I left it out. I know it will throw a code for this eventually. The strange thing is my transmission issues are completely gone. I drove it alot and it seens to be normal now. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this I can only think that it is cooling the tranny more then it did before. Any thoughts?

Yes, ATF runs more cool now. It will have limited effect, the flare will eventually return. I know this, because V70's bad shifts issue was first gone after external oil cooler was fitted, but in a few months it returned back. Fixed by a reman. valve body.

Ahh makes sense. I just need to bite the bullet on the valve body. Thanks for the reply

Just thinking, maybe replacing the fluid meanwhile will help a bit. Old fluid has lost it's properties as transmission fluids degrade with heat. Still keeping no thermostat and a valve body job soon in view.

This is out of question, ATF must be clean and fresh all the time.
