02 S60 AWD Auto gear stick "floats" to manual shift mode

Post by Volvofan94 »

Hey MVS,

Over this past weekend we installed a new stereo into our 2002 Volvo S60 AWD (automatic transmission) with 145k miles. Today when we drove it to work everything was fine, car went into drive and the transmission shifted normally. However on the way home, while in drive, the gear stick seemed to float itself over to manual mode with little to no resistance. Normally there is a switch-like feel when changing the gear stick from normal drive mode to manual mode, but now that feeling seems to have gone away. I think the problem may be with the shifter assembly itself, but not sure how to test or fix the problem. In order to drive the car now the gear stick has to be almost held in drive by hand. No CEL lights or messages on the dashboard and the transmission continues to shift smoothly. Ideas?

Thank you!

ahh...yes, that makes sense JRL, thank you!

What is the Volvo part number for the shifter spring kit? Today I'll do some searching on my usual Volvo part suppliers to see if I can find it.
