1999 V70 XCAWD - Whining noise when driving

I have a 1999 Volvo V70 XC with 185000 miles that has a whining noise that seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel area. The noise is only heard when the vehicle is in motion. The weird thing is that the noise comes and goes. Half the time, I cannot hear anything, but all of a sudden when driving the whinning noise appears for a little while, then goes silent again, and repeats. The noise changes pitch depending on the speed of the car and it doesn't make any difference if I am turning or going over bumps. Any suggestions on what I should look for?
