S70 Knock sensor -- repairs tomorrow

S70 Knock sensor -- repairs tomorrow

Having the PCV system replaced tomorrow and some turbo hoses replaced. I had also purchased a new knock sensor few months back because I got the P0330 code. Question -- would replacing the knock sensor be easier when the PCV repairs are being done? (the PCV canister etc).

Volvo doesn't seem to care if there's a part that's made accessible by another repair, they just charge you what it says on the computer. If this knock sensor is made easier, I'm going to make a stink about it

Yeah they are tucked up behind the intake, so if it's coming off for a PCV repair then I would do it at the same time.They might also try to hit you for another intake gasket the 2nd time around.

Agreed, it is hugely easier to do the knock sensor during a PCV service. Like 90% overlap in effort.

Pay attention to the orientation of the sensors before you remove the old ones, I don't know why but their orientation is important and the new ones should go on with the wire end at the same "clockface" orientation as the originals.

The torque spec for the knock sensor is low and over tightening them will ruin them. You need a torque wrench for this. I don't have the 1998 spec handy but someone with VIDA will post

Ehhhhhh yes the torque spec is low but I have never used a torque wrench on the knock sensors. In at least a dozen installations, I have just put them on snugly. And I have never (yet?) ruined one. I don't know that I have heard of anyone ruining them, TBH.

With all due respect to those of you experienced guys with 'feel' which I don't have 8)...
I am a numbers person and I prefer the torque wrench...

To the OP:
The torque value for the KSs is 20 Nm (see attached procedure from VIDA for positioning and tightening, etc.)

(Don't forget to look at my Example for Precision below the post) :lol:

So I just got back from dropping it off at the dealer and the guy says "so we just need to replace the flame trap right"?

I have no idea what he's talking about as I said I needed the PCV system rebuilt and included a kit from FCP. I also said that I needed the knock sensor replaced and as they're in the same area maybe I can save on labor costs which seemed to go in one ear and out the other.

So as I was leaving he again said "replace the flame trap, got it". Never again will I take it to Volvo, it's always some arrogant shit you have to listen to. WTF is the flame trap?

It is one of the components in the PCV system.
If you are getting a kit from FCP, be mindful of the rubber components in it. You do not want any of the cheap URO stuff that will last for half a season if that.
Get the part numbers from the FCP kit and then look them up here by part number or by YMM : http://volvopartslisle.com/catalog/1998 ... s-Diagrams
You might as well get even better prices than FCP's 8)

Yeah, I figured the trap was that main component (the canister?). This is the last time I do the dealer. If you're the least bit informed about an issue they don't want to give you the credit for having a brain. They HATE that in fact. I also mentioned the P0442 code which on my last trip the dealer I tried to get them to trace and he said he never heard of it. (really?) And this guy has been there I'm guessing for 30 + years. Fuck it -- always frustrating with them. They only do what's written in the service order and never go the extra mile. Fix it like it's YOUR CAR is all I ask and that never happens.
