99. V70xc turbo. Radiator assembly fluid types?

Post by ketchgould »

Im installing a xemodex throttle control, and also a new radiator. This is a turbo xc70. I pulled out the radiator and ac and tubo fans together. What type of coolant should i use with new radiator? I believe oil came out of a line when i removed too...how and where do i fill that again and with what type of fluid?

Any other handy repairs that should be done now that the car is pulled apart a bit?

Thanks a lot!

If you have an automatic transmission that is probably ATF (red) fluid - and you need to be careful to keep that clean.

On earlier cars the engine oil cooler was in the radiator but on your 1999 it moved to the back of the engine

In terms of fluid, you will need to check which ATF to use in your car as there are 2 types. Check the handbook for this.

Personally I prefer to use Volvo coolant fluid, but others use generic, but I can't recommend which ones work.

Either Volvo or Zerex G05, Volvo is blue and Zerex is gold colored antifreeze. I would completely drain the antifreeze before putting in new stuff.

If some ATF leaked out from the driver's side of the radiator, I wouldn't worry too much. there is about 1/2 quart in the ATF cooler and that shouldn't make any difference to a 9 quart system. If you have a 5 speed autobox, the ATF is 3309, otherwise you can use DEX/MERC equivilent.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.
