01 V70 2.3 T5 turbo upgrade advice needed

Post by belskee » Mon Nov 02, 2015 11:55 am

Hi all now that my v70 t5 has been running sweet for a fair few months I'm getting interested in making it faster.

I have been planning using the r manifold 3" downpipe dropping to 2.5 from cat back but its the turbocharger i would like to talk about or get advice on i should say.

I understand that the r manifolds can hold a few different turbos (correct me if im wrong) td04 18t, kkk k24 and the td04 19t?

The 19t is the one I'm a bit confused about I keep reading here and there that it's a good upgrade and with the right mapping and mods 350 bhp can be easily reached.

The issue I'm having is when I'm looking around for this turbo I keep coming to saab 93's, the turbo flange looks right and the name is right but I didn't think I'd be pulling one off a saab and without being able to match any part numbers I'm in the dark as to whether I'm looking at the right turbo.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here or can I just pull this turbo off a saab 93? If so would a flange adaptor be needed?

Would I be better to just get the 18t with the r manifold I'm not sure so can anyone point me in the right direction. Cheers jim

I just spent about 2 hours to see what cars (other than Volvo) came with it, it seems that the Saab guys are converting to the 19t from a volvo with an adapter needed. It does not appear that Saab had these as stock options.

And I can feel your pain about being bored, I can't really do anything until the mot which is due in a few month and at which time I will also try find a spares and repairs with good wheels and leather seats, a lots going to be swapped and many spare parts will be cached as possible.

This is what happened a month ago when I got bored, don't worry as I said I'm going stainless soon, I just wanted to have a play about and get the cobwebs off the welder, sounds nice though it's a center box off a seat cupra r (ibiza).

at least the 2000 V70R! From V70r.com:

TD04HL-13G, Volvo 850 LPT, X70 LPT
TD04HL-15G, Volvo 850 T5, 850R
TD04HL-16T, X70 T5 98-00
TD04HL-18T, 99 V70R
TD04HL-19T, 00 V70R

And..

I dig the exhaust! I miss my welder, there's always something to do when you have a welder! 8)

Thanks if this is correct then its going to be much simpler as both bits are needed from the same car, I can just strip a manifold off the r with the turbo still attached, I find it easier than removing the turbo then the manifold anyway. But yeah nice one.

I couldn't part with my welder, Its the snap on 130 turbo although bit of an antique it still lays a good bead as you can see in the pictures, I got it when I had my (hold my hands up) mr2 so was used alot back then, now I have the volvo I never see it.

Soon as I can get a new torch and liner sorted and I have the r manifold, turbo and the downpipe in my hands I'll set the welder up for stainless and make my own half system, Is a little way off though as I said need the manifold first and also thinking if im going for all this I might as well port/polish the turbo and manifold while they are off the car, the re map obviously will be the last thing I do.

In North America, the 2.5 (2001+) header is the same as the 2.3 R (1995-2000). This information comes from my friend Brett Borders, a local indie Volvo shop service writer.

2.5's were far more common.

I'm from the uk so not too sure what you're meaning by header, is this the manifold or the system as a whole?

My trackion control light came on yesterday so took the wheels off to clean the sensors which sure enough sorted it, noticed my drop near side drop link is bent though, will be needed for the mot and reading on here about the ipd links being a good Improvment over oem's so will try them out, when i order i log on here and just use the link to ipd which helps this site is this right?
