My wife's 2005 XC70 (89k) had the CEL come on so I pulled the codes and they turned out to be P0026 and P0027. Intake and exhaust control solenoids. It ran normally. I cleared the codes and the next day I took it for a test run, about 3 miles, to see if they would return. They did, only this time when I got home it started to make valve train noise, pretty loud too. I parked it and let it sit for about 7 hours before I got a chance to move into the garage. I started it and no noise. Checked the oil, level was a bit low but not too bad (about 3/4 of a quart low). Cleared the codes again and started the car. Let it idle for about 15 minutes and no CEL. No noise. Put it in gear and BINGO CEL. This time only P0027. I suspect it didn't have time to through P0026. Could it be the Timing Belt?

It could have jumped a notch, which will give those codes if the solenoids go out of range. If you don't drive hard, you might not feel the difference either.

Your TB is due on time btw - has it been changed?

If it has jumped a tooth, I would park the car until you get it changed...as in tow it, do not drive it, to an indie for that service.
