96 Volvo 850 how to test cooling fan off the car?

Post by JimBee »

A newish looking cooling fan at the pnp begged me to take it home. It spins freely though with "soft catches" which I assume are caused by ceramic magnets, but I want to power it up off the car to check it while under warranty before I put it in inventory as there's no need for it right now.

According to this diagram,

power comes to the fan motor via the red or green wires from the relay(s).

But mine looks a little different. It has red and black only to the fan motor. The black goes to the rectangular union. The green and red go into what looks like a capacitor mounted on the fan housing.

Can I power this unit directly from a car battery without going through a relay and without causing damage? Connect ground to the black wire at the open connector and power to the green or red for power at different speeds?
