DIY 2005 XC90 2.5T Rear Brake (Parking Brake) 31262874 Overhaul Topic is solved

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

Frankly, I changed out the OEM pads when the rear brake discs wore out around 127,000 miles. At that time, I replaced the discs (with are also designed for the drum brake system for the parking brake) and the parking brake pads. The installation was done properly, but the parking brake never worked properly thereafter. At first, I thought it they needed to be worn in. Only much later, when I needed them to work (such as on a boat launch ramp), I went back in. The non-OEM pads without the ground down areas had not worn out. There was plenty of brake pad on them. They simply did not work. It was the Indi repair shop that put me on to the reason why. And when I went to the volvo dealer for OEM, there it was. Flat ground area on round brake shoes.

actually, I changed the OEM rear parking shoes and disc brake pads and rotor using FCP Euro sourced parts at 127,000 miles and assumed they would work. In fact, I was really jamming on the parking brake thinking I did not have enough pressure on it, rather than assume that brand new brake shoes would not work. This frustration went on for 60,000 more miles until I called an Indie shop. As mentioned, they recommended grinding a flat spot on the shoes. Rather than do this, I went to a Volvo dealer and inspected their shoes and sure enough Volvo's brake shoes come with the flat spot already ground into them. So I bought a set and the parking brake worked perfectly and easily ever since.

Added part number to title, great write up !

The flat spot on the parking brake shoes seems to be an XC90 thing only, do go OEM on these

My PAGID brake shoes (see photo on the first page) work just fine.
