cam sensor wiring connector

Post by Yellowstone Savage74 »

The plastic connector for my cam sensor has disintegrated and I need the correct order to make a new connection.

The cam sensor wires are red, green & blue and the corresponding connector is yellow/red, blue/yellow & brown/black.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Volvo doesn't call them out in any of the schematics since the sensor itself is a vendor item and it was subject to variations. What I can tell you is that Brown/Black is pin 1, Blue/Yellow is pin 2, and Yellow/Red is pin 3.

On my cars the sensor wires are not visible since they are all molded into the connector but I did find this picture that gives us clues:

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... -lots-more

From that picture the Green wire is definitely Pin 2 but I can't tell from the indexing tabs on the picture which side is Pin 1 and which is Pin 3.

Since we know that the green ties to the blue / yellow wire then it only leaves two other possible combinations and, if you can't glean the proper orientation from the Swedespeed pictures, you can try it both ways. One way it will work and the other way it won't.

Once you figure it out post it back and we can throw it into the repair database for future reference.

Thanks Lee. Based on the pic on Swedespeed I'm going to try the red to brown/black connection option first.

I just replaced my rear main seal and if that is the only thing that doesn't work when I start her up I will be very happy.

New Bosch Cam Sensor is $99.
Used at junk yard about $10.

All 1993-997 850 and 1998 S70/V70 use the same Cam Sensor.
1999+ is different.

Anyway, I have a spare cam sensor from a 1998 S70.
I took a random photo from the internet and I just checked the coloring code for you, here you go...

I tried the red wire on both sides and the engine turns over but will not start either way. The engine was running fine before I dropped it to replace the rear main seal.

Check everything...crank sensor connector, spark plug wires order, virtually everything that you disconnected for the RMS job...

Victory! I checked my other connections and with the red cam wire to the yellow/red she started this time. I took it down to t end of the cul de sac and back (didn't know I could hold my breath that long) and nothing fell off or went clunk. I topped up my fluids and took her out of the neighborhood for a real test and everything is working normally.

Thanks again to MVS and the weelsup PDF for walking me through the RMS replacement project. Just one last question...who will clean my garage while I go out on the patio for a cold one? (gotta love Florida)
