Leak detection pump? 2009 S40

Post by CoconutRob »

I have a 2009 s40 all started with a draining battery. finally tracked it down to the leak detection pump running after engine off. I guess it runs until it kills battery. I heard a whinning noise coming from rear of car after my wife parked and shut engine off. at first I thaught it was fuel pump. pull relay kills it. she has been solving the problem after several mon, morning dead batteries by turning ignition key to position 1 then back off that would kill it. then I noticed the other day when she came home shut car off I could hear the pump. poped open the fuel door and it stopped. so then I finally tracked it to the pump. What could be causing this pump to stay on? I am not a mechanic but vary handy and capable of the fix just don't want to start replacing parts, any help will be greatly appereciated thanks, rob

That is all I can find about leak detection pumps. This is an uncommon problem.

CoconutRob, what ended up being the cause of your pump continuing to run after shut off? I'm having exactly the same issue with my 2006 XC90 2.5. No CEL or codes, no idle problems or hesitation, just whining pump noise near rear pass tire after shutting the car off. Tried turning key to position I, opening fuel door, and even new gas cap, but only way to kill pump is to pull fuel pump fuse under the hood or disconnect the battery. Hoping this is something I can fix myself. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thx!
