No engine lights, all 5 cyl stored misfire codes, ETM fail type symptoms
Starts OK. After being driven a few miles. Idle up stumbles badly and shortly limp mode. Turn off restart..repeat til home or work.
I'd hate to change the ETM and have it be a ground or ECU. Any info or leads would be appreciated.

Here's the flow chart I used when diagnosing similar issues,

Thanks Russ ! This chart is telling me it is not the ETM and that I have to diagnose my misfire problems. It's all 5 cylinders.

I'd check battery/battery cables first. My 850 stalled a month ago and it was simply a loose battery terminal cable. 2 minutes later, all was well.

Thanks Matt,
I have check the battery cables with a VOM meter. Zero Ohms through them and 12+ volts on either end of + cable with respect to battery ground..
I will retest now. The battery is weak(old) but provides over 12vdc.
The running issues only happen when warm, but happens consistently.

Let's get some more precision on those measurements. 12.xx volts on battery and at primary fuse box??
Your VOM probably isn't sensitive enough to measure the low cable resistance.
Fly by wire cars need good voltage at all times

It was the ETM.
I installed a Xemodex unit today. It was difficult to trouble-shoot, as it only happened when the car was at full operating temperate for a while. I had to get it hot then, trouble shoot using the Xemodex flow chart:
http://xemodex.com/us/knowledgebase/etm ... 1999-2004/
With the car warm, I was working with the "fuse #2" step, I was hearing a relay engage that was not the ETM moving, yet sounded like it could be.
I disconnected the ETM electrically. I still heard the 'relay'click. This told me the click was not the ETM moving and that the sound was a different function.
The conclusion is the ETM plate was not moving/had difficulty moving, when the vehicle was warm. Voltages had remained in spec at the connector.
I ordered the Xemodex unit late Dec 21. It was shipped in the morning of the 22nd and arrived in NJ in the morning of the 23rd.
Heavy rain and exhaustion forced me to wait til this morning Dec 24th to install it. It works very well.
There is a minor drop at idle sometimes. Nothing at all like it was at all. I can drive to visit my family for Christmas!
I ordered a new Bosch MAF from German Auto. I intend to reinstall my new after market coils and maybe new plugs along with the new MAF in the next few days.

Just to update, I thought I had, the mis-fire codes were caused by the after market coils. They work OK but if you read with a scanner, it will show misfires on all cylinders. It is not enough to light a MIL.
