1995 Volvo 850 T5-R Info switch light bulb replacement

Post by pkc303 »

So I finally got irritated enough to tackle the info light in the info switch on the T5-R. I've looked at it for a while, and have purchased replacements at the junk yard, but only to find out the bulb was inoperative. I discovered it is the same bulb used in the other dash switch lights.

I removed the switch, and placed it on the bench. I removed the cover with a small screw driver, actually two. See photos.

After removing the cover, I found a spring for the reset pushbutton, and the rotating knob.

Note that the stop is south of the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, and the upper portion of the white rotation part has ridges for the ball bearing in the cover.

Note the white selector knob has a pin that acts as a stop. It should be on the bottom of the switch. You can see the ridges in the white knob where the ball bearing fits. In the picture, the pin is kinda hidden, but is is behind the shaft, just to the right.

You can see the light. It is on the board. It is the same light bulb that is in the other lights. To get to the light the prongs can be pushed up gently to free the board.

When the board is free, there is a plastic part that has a hole in it to allow you to loosen the bulb, but it will not allow the bulb to come out.
I was able to pry the plastic back, but in hindsight, I would've broken out the dremel tool, and cut it a little bit. You can see the damage done to the board. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't clean.

I'm omitting the replacement of the bulb, as that is covered in other topics. I had to use needle nose pliers to get the bulb tightened in the board.

I then put it all back together, reversing the previous procedure. I plugged it in, and it worked. Great success.
