Couple questions from a new XC90 Owner

Couple questions from a new XC90 Owner

Post by justin210485 »

Just bought a 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD. Really happy with aside a few things. I did a few searches but for some reason you cant use a word with 3 letters or less so the word "key" doesn't find me much hehe. I need to get a replacement main key. We are using the valet key, it works but. Dealer said $400 for the new FOB/key. Anyone know of a place where you can get a legit key with programming code? Also i am looking to add aux/usb to the stock radio. The only thing i have seen is the Grom-mst4 which add's a box connected to the multi disc changer. Its $300 as well lol. Anyone know of a cheaper option? From what i understand it uses MOST, which uses Optic cable.

Heya! I'm in the same boat. New-to-me 2004 XC90 2.5T... however, only FWD.

I've found nothing on getting a transponder for the key. You can pick up cheap keys from ebay and have a local locksmith cut them. However, you still need to get a transponder installed since they ebay keys come with nothing in them.

As for the radio... there's a hack on soldering in an AUX cable. It's not the same a true aux input. Here's the link:

Heya... so i found some info on keys... just in case you're still looking:

1: Find local locksmith that can CLONE the transponder of your current key to the new one AND laser cut it. Most car specialized locksmiths can do this now. They will match your old key to the new one and clone the transponder. These guys appear like they can do it: http://www.cars-locksmith.com/redwood-city/ , http://carlocksmithredwoodcity.com/automotive/ or just google for more

2: purchase key blank WITH transponder, like so http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Volvo-ke...-/370884789912

3: Purchase yourself a fob with or without key, you can find them on ebay.

4: contact the locksmith to cut and program your new key.

A full-service key w/o remote is about $210 at Volvo dealer.
It is a ripoff but it is what it is.

Keys. I've had a few replaced and there's no cheap way around it unless one of the folks who does this on the back-end pops up (requires DICE and PC with remote access I believe) and helps. You can save a few bucks by buying a Volvo key and remote from an authorized parts reseller, just keep all the packaging and be sure you can get steel blank cut locally or make arrangements in advance for where you'll get it cut. Software cost to add a key (~$30 each) and a remote is the same whether you do one key or more (must be same vehicle) so you may negotiate a couple bucks off that way as well. I've had 4 keys and remotes made over 16 years so sadly know the drill. Nevertheless, it pays to ask around of you have more than one dealer handy.
Another option is to get a few friends together with a VIDA and a DICE then do the software under a 3-day paid subscription ($64) to spread the cost. Won't get you any discounts on software but would save some money on the labor.

Aux. I'm too cheap to run a GROM myself, did the AM radio workaround twice. This is another detailed thread- https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/aux- ... 06.212123/ , the guy who wrote it is still around.
Reworked my '05 many years ago (now sold) and did the '06 just last spring using an original aux jack cupholder. See https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/volv ... st-7827675 for a visual.

Isn't "Mr12Volt" an option for you in the US, too?

I have one in my '07 XC with High-Performance but without CD-Changer. It's looped in the optical fibre and act's like a CD for the stock radio. I can stream via BT, has handsfree, and I can use it with the steering wheel remote (but just basic functions).

RE- the aux input... If you are just looking to use your phone to stream music, phone or navigation, an FM / Bluetooth adapter works great. There is some minor loss of bandwidth but they are cheap and easy to use.

If you want the key done properly I'd go to the Volvo dealership. Most Locksmiths wont mess with the chipped/laser cut keys.
