Looks like I'll be replacing the internal clutch slave cylinder on my '98 V70 instead of my mechanic. I've seen Taxi's thread on rear main seal/clutch replacement for his 850, where he drops the subframe on one side and slides the trans out the wheel well. Any tips/tricks I should be aware of for this job? I know it'll be a fair bit of time as book labor is about 9-10 hours. I figure I'll need 1.5 to 2x that as far as time goes depending on how many rusty bolts I hit.
I'm also thinking about how much sense it makes to put a Sachs internal slave cylinder back in there if the old one failed at 60K miles.
Anybody got suggestions for a better slave cylinder?

Can I retrofit an external slave if the original equipment is internal? If so, will I need a different clutch hydraulic line? What's the theory behind moving the slave cylinder to the inside of the bell housing?

To change to an external you need to change the bell housing, the slave cylinder, the fork, and I think the throwout bearing. The transmission still needs to come out to do it.
As far as why they moved it, I have no idea.

Do I need to change the bell housing if it has the appropriate tab on it? I've read elsewhere that Volvo continued fitting some of the older style bell housings even after going to the internal slave.

I am about to do exactly the same thing...change the slave cylinder, clutch, pressure plate and pilot bearing. My 1998 V70 went 160K before needing some work. I have to say, please pay attention to what I am about to pass on...
I went though extensive research on this and found out that there were 3 different designs of slave cylinders and locations for 1998 trough 2000. Volvo changed over from an external cylinder in mid 1998. There also was some other small changes to the pressure plate to accommodate the internal / external design. I went to three different Volvo Dealers to find out which one I had and got three different answers. At one of them, I insisted they send my VIN to Volvo in Sweden and they finally found the right one. Mine has an internal slave design. I was told that the bell housing is the same, but there are more part changes needed to convert to an external design (cylinder, lines, mounts, etc.) The internal design is fine as mine really has no functional problem, but squeaks terribly. Warning, do not use aftermarket! The prices are not that different and it is worth it if you are going to spend over 12 hours on this. Change the clutch, pressure plate and pilot bushing while you are in there.
