Seeking advice about my 1998 V70 T5 that runs well (except no antilock brakes) but the cel, abs and tracs lights on and the following codes generated:

ABS-313/324: RL ABS SENSOR
ABS-314/324: RR WHEEL SENSOR FAULT
ABS-443: ABS PUMP MOTOR
EFI-442: AIR PUMP
EFI-448: AIR PUMP
EFI-612: TANK SYSTEM INTERMITTANT
FAULT- SMALL LEAK
EFI-123: ECT SENSOR

My understanding is EFI-448 is related to a faulty air pump that functions only on start until the cat converter can function and that I can take the time to diagnose further and repair myself.

EFI-123: is this an engine coolant temperature fault? What is the significance and a reasonable diagnostic/repair strategy?

I’m hoping most of the remainder will be addressed by a rebuilt ABS module.

Does this sound reasonable, with the caveat that I don’t know anything about EFI-123? Any suggestions?

The ECT sensor is actually pretty important since it adjusts the mixture (injector duty cycle) based on engine temperature. With a bad ECT sensor the car usually starts hard and the fuel mileage stinks. It is customary to change the thermostat at the same time as the ECT sensor since they are both there together. Avoid aftermarket ECT sensors. The OEM is really the only way to go since it is such a critical sensor. It is painfully expensive by about double but the OEM works and works consistently while the aftermarket brands seem to be spotty at best.

Have you tried to just clear all of the codes and then see what comes back? The Volvo ECU is like an elephant and it never forgets any error unless it is reset. Some of your codes may be legacy codes that the underlying problems was already corrected on.

The air pump (SAS pump) can be bypassed and has several links on this site for it. It will depend on whether you have emissions testing in your state and if they are pertinent to your age of car.

There are also some how-to's on Internet and MVS on how to repair air-pump. Biggest issue with those are the valve at the turbo feed end fails open and allows condensation to drain down to the air-pump and it eventually rusts out the bearings and seize the pump. This is because there is no where for the moisture to drain out. I suggest drilling an 1/8" hole in the bottom of the pump to allow it to drain if the valve fails. If you replace the SAS (air-pump) replace the valve at the same time.

Abs-313 and 314 are both open circuit codes, they should have been preceded by extrapolation or faulty reading codes for each given sensor. That's provided you didn't previously erase the codes, then that would explain why you just have two circuit fault codes now.

Pump motor code is normal for a faulty module.

This is how codes normally populate with a faulty module, this particular one has been faulty for a long time.

Thanks. The codes are from the mechanic who has serviced this car for years, not my own scanner. I suppose this may not be the complete list. I'm thinking a scanner would be a good investment for me. Cheap compared to the cost of repairs. Is there a section here that discusses and recommends scanners for this car (1998 V70 T5). I'm haven't found such information on this site.

I hope to replace the abs module myself and the site linked in your reply seems like the place to go for this. I've read and viewed videos describing the replacement and poked around in my engine compartment. My only concern is getting access to the torx screws that retain the module. I've tried to get my hands in there and it seems to be an extremely tight fit. I know removing hoses, etc. can help so I guess it's time to try.

The codes below were cleared by my usual mechanic and cel went off about a month ago on the vehicle that initiated this post - 1998 V70 T5. The cel then turned on again about a week later.

ABS-313/324: RL ABS SENSOR
ABS-314/324: RR WHEEL SENSOR FAULT

I've just started monitoring OBD2 output myself using Torque and this device (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NL ... ge_o02_s00).

I see real time info but no codes (pending, logged or historical) despite the fact that the cel is still on.

My understanding is the ABS codes above should not trigger the cel and that the cel can be triggered without codes being detected later even using the most comprehensive scan tools available. Presumably the latter represents some sort of aberrant triggering of the cel not related to a real fault and that this should not recur reproducibly after the cel is turned off.

I plan to address the abs issues by replacing the abs module.

My question really is what to do about the current cel. One way is to activate the "clear code" function in Torque, even though no codes are detected, and see what happens. But I would be more comfortable if I knew the scanner/Torque as installed in my vehicle were actually capable of detecting codes. Is there some way to verify this? Is there some reversible intervention that will reliably generate a code that I can use to show that the scanner/Torque is working to detect codes?

Abs codes won't trigger the CEL on a 98. Your codes are fairly easy.....your air pump is shot, you have an evap system leak and your temp sensor might me bad.

No personal experience with torque, but if codes are there and set it's going to display them.
