98 S70 - Grinding when turning left

Post by Dualhammers »

When I take a left turn if I turn the wheel more than halfway I start to get a scraping noise that sounds like it is coming from below me near the wheel. Turning right I don't hear this noise even if I turn the wheel all the way. Is this power steering issues and I'm getting uneven noise because we make wider turns on the left or is it a different problem?

Did you install any new rotors?

Are you using stock rims? Any offset stuff?

Have you removed the wheel and reinstalled it?

If metal is grinding, there should be a mark (scratch, discoloration) where metal is touching metal...

Good luck finding it.

A wheel bearing which is about to fail would make a scraping noise when you turn, but if it was the wheel bearing then you would be driving with a humming noise, similar to an airplane engine, so unless you thought your car engine was meant to sound like its ready to take off, then you can rule that out!

I would jack the car up, remove the wheel and start checking to see if anything is obviously wrong as could be something as simple as the brake shield scraping the rotor or a foreign object trapped between shield/rotor, as I had a scraping noise before and turned out to be a stone lodged against the rotor.
