Windshield Trim Pieces 94 850 sedan

Post by kippster41493 »

I'm looking to replace the windshield pretty soon (decent crack on passenger side and pitted pretty well across the whole window/worn wiper marks that are scratched into it) My top trim piece ripped off most of the way not long ago while driving, ripped it completely off when I stopped. Was wondering where to get the trim pieces? The top for obvious reasons, and the side ones that go all the way over the roof that go to the rear windshield are just faded and look like crap. I called a local place that replaces windows and they said they "think" they are looking at the correct pieces but I wasn't too positive they were. I didn't ask safelite if they replaced the trim with it or not.

If you've got access to a pick-n-pull junkyard in your area, that would be a great way to find the top and side trim pieces.
On the side pieces, I had good luck stripping all the old black plastic coating off and painting the underlying aluminum with some rustoleum black paint. That has been holding up pretty well for a few years.

The top trim piece any glass shop can do, they will just use generic stripping, and it will probably look and function just fine. Or you can get the piece from Volvo and give it to them, there are a lot of posts here in the forum about that piece.

The side trim pieces they will not have, and I am pretty sure Volvo doesn't sell them any more. I agree with jreed - you can try to find a set in better shape e.g. at a junkyard, or pull them off then strip them down and re-paint.

I'm pretty sure the top trim piece isn't anything special, most auto glass shops just cut the front window top stripping from a standard stock.

Ok, I wasn't sure if they were specific to vehicles or not. Do the side trim pieces just pull out? Seems easy enough to just take mine off, strip them, and re-paint. I would imagine the ones at the junk yard look just as bad haha.

Yes, the side pieces just pull up. Start from the lower corners of the windshield. There is a clip about every 8 inches, take care that you don't bend or fold the trim piece.

The S70 side windshield/roof trim pieces are nicer, including a groove that channels water up over the top instead of around the side windows. And they swap right over. If I was going to take the trouble to do a refurb, I would grab a set from an S70, and do it on those. For that matter I try to replace all of the strips on my 850s with x70 ones. I have some extra wagon strips that could be cut down for a sedan but shipping these is a bit of a nightmare so unless you are passing through central Iowa, consider hitting up the yard.

Considering that's about a 4-5 hour drive just from some trim pieces, I think I'll look in a yard a bit closer :) I can't imagine trying to ship those, plus I would bet anything they would get damaged/ bent anyway. I would be less mad if I was the one that caused the damage. Awesome tip though, I'll definitely be looking for S70 models around the area here!

Isn't it just a matter of finding the right packaging for the job?
Cardboard cores/tubes, with a sufficient wall thickness, used for storing and shipping posters... Just an idea.

You're right Teddy, of course you could do it, but it may not be worth it. Unfortunately a tube won't work, the strips are not very flexible. I have actually shipped the short ones, from a car with roof racks, they fit in a reasonable box no problem.

But the long ones, for a no-rack P80 car, have two longish sections of like 4 and 6 feet joined by an inflexible bend of ~120 degrees. So you could put them flat in a box, but it would be oversize, like 3 feet by 6+ feet. And super light, but I suspect you would pay a lot just for the size.
