Speed sensor part numbers and ohm readings

Post by don98s90 »

Hello,

I am chasing the Volvo flashing up arrow and gear selector light issue on our 1998 S90. I have replaced the PNP, Check the ohms on the transmission speed sensor (it was within the 300 -600ohm range that Alldata says is good). I then checked the speed sensor on the differential and found its ohm reading to be 1280 ohms versus the 300 - 600 ohm range.

I started looking for a replacement part. The original Volvo part number 1398321 for the differential speed sensor is no longer available. The information I have from eEuroparts is that Volvo part 1398321 was replaced by Volvo part 8141475. eEuroparts information also says that Bosch part number 0265001187 is the exact same part. Carquest/Advanced Auto Parts information also say that Bosch part number 0265001187 is the part needed for the 1998 S90.

I tried to contact a Bosch representative to determine if Bosch made the sensor for Volvo and if the 0265001187 was the best replacement part. I searched the Bosch web site and searched for a Bosch distributor looking for a technical contact or a listing of the specifications for 0265001187 part. I wanted to confirm that the ohm range was still 300 - 600.

I have purchased and installed a Bosch 0265001187 sensor and I am getting an ohm reading of 840 for this new sensor. I test drove the car and the flashing lights were gone for the first mile and a half. But, as I pulled into the driveway the lights started flashing again.

The help I need is:
One, does anyone know how to contact a Bosch technical person?
Two, how does an ohm reading out of the range impact the speedometer, tach, and transmission control module?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Don

Volvo says: "Resistance should vary from 600-1600 ohms as rear wheels are rotated."

See this thread, and download the 94ABS960 file.

I would highly suggest following the details within that tech literature...no shortcuts
I have replaced the PNP
1997 S90: car back..high gear meaning sluggish start..smell..leaks

"A skilled mechanic should be able to figure out how to adjust it without the special tool. Here is a picture of how it lines up with the tool. "

"As long as the flat sides of the gear selector shaft line are parallel and line up with the mark on the sensor when the transmission is in neutral, it is lined up correctly. To verify, make sure the reverse lights come on when in reverse and go out in park and neutral. "

Are you guessing at speed sensor as the issue or have you gotten a stored code that points to it?

Jimmy57, Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I have printed the information on the anti-lock brakes. I will read through it tomorrow as it is late.

I have used a scanner and gotten a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor A message. I also got a list starting with Fuel Sys ! CL-fault and ending with Aux Input Status. I wrote down those messages with the engine off setting in the garage and again as my wife took us for a test ride. I can share those readouts if that would be helpful.

Again, I will read the antilock brake information and complete those checks tomorrow.
