unknown transmission component

Post by figmaister »

A friend of mine borrowed my S60, returned it to me with transmission problem. Car won't go into gear, only when reved high, it barely moves, but if pushed it will get going and once momentum is built it drives fine, until I get to a stop sign, then have to start over again. Also, found this part in the cup holder (see pics).....does anyone know where it might be from? Looks/smells like gear oil??

Thanks

Looks like the part snapped from some where. Can you see a part number on it?

You are describing the limp home setting of transmission. It takes off in 3rd gear so it is gutless but once you get to the speed range where it would be in 3rd gear normally it feels normal.

I am fairly sure that is not a part from a volvo. It looks like a broken piece of a rubber damped serpentine belt tensioner but your car does not use one of those.
Is there any message in instrument cluster about tranmission? Check engine light on?

Almost looks like part of a seat adjuster but both the thread and the casting are broken,so it's a part of a part problem

The transmission might be in the W mode? Do you see a D or a W on the instrument panel under the Rpm gauge?

Jimmy57,

What could cause the transmission to go into limp mode? Electrical or mechanical issue, or both?

Thanks

It really can be either. Thats why you need the codes to get started on diagnosis. There are so many failure mechanisms on electronically controlled cars you can't trouble shoot it by symptom anymore.
