'96 850 paint peeling

Post by Teddy1975 »

The 850 I have has started to shed its skin. I don't believe it'll grow in a new skin, like a spider would though, so I really do want to do something about it.

What seems to be happening is the clear top coat is coming apart from the colour layer and when a large enough piece is loose, it'll fall off. Some of the pieces I've seen were more than a square inch in size. I don't have any pictures to show of it as of now, I'll see if I can take some tomorrow.

I'm mostly worried about these spots with no clear coat will turn into rust and hoping to avoid a respray as that is definately out of the question.

Is there any way to stop the peeling before my Volvo ends up naked and embaressed?

I'd strip the rest of the clear coat and re-clear it. I'm not sure you can wax the base coat like you can with the clear.

On our 94 850 the roof started to peel. Tried to sand off clear coat and respray.....turned ugly fast. Had to color coat then clear.

On mine it's mostly on the hood, at least that's where I noticed it.

Khal, did you remove the color that was on it or rough it up, then color and clear coat it?

If clear is peeling then all you can do is sand it down you may be able to re-clear but probably not if just the roof you could wrap it

Your best option, right here. Sand and repaint. With any luck, you won't go through the base coat and you can just re-clear it.
Vinyl wrap wouldn't be an awful option. It's a PITA, though... my interior trim wrap attempt went terribly.

I agree, sand and repaint. Unless you sand, you have no sure idea what you're trapping in the layers of paint.

Do you guys use a pneumatic spray paint gun for the base and clear? I'm going to be fixing a couple small rust spots this summer. I had a local paint shop make some custom paint in spray-can form that matched my white 1990 240. But I've got my 98 V70 now, paint is much more complex on this car haha.

I snapped a couple of pictures of the culprit today and had a closer look at the other panels on the car.

Both wings have started to rust in the usual spots (lower side next to door and next to the head lights). And the boot lid is rusted through in the lower left hand corner. PO had taped it up seemingly a long time ago and never bothered dealing with it. At least I know how to weld/solder so just have to wait for warmer weather for that job.

The clear coat lifting on the hood is probably due to stone chips, as you can see from the first picture.

Yellow circle seems to be where a stone has hit the paint.

There are a lot of stone chips all over the hood so I'm thinking maybe the vinyl wrap wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. Have anyone tried that and if so, how does it look over time?

You could try to sand and then clear it with rattle can clear, but honestly it is postponing the inevitable.

I have the same problem on my 1997 850R, and the 1995 T5-R had the same problem. Had to do a full paint job. Did it myself, with some good advice from a friend. Lots of work, and still not done, because one thig leads to another, and the next thing you know, you are doing a full restore.

Good luck.
