2.4 lpt - local machine shop?

Post by beigg »

Before plunging into picking up a good engine i wanted to see about a reputable machine shop in the south eastern Michigan area that knows and does volvo block work. Not worried about the head. I know of a few places that commonly deal with ls1 and 351w as well as srt4 & 4g63's. Rather go with a trusted volvo shop if plausible.

Or, if an engine distributor that have the 2.4t volvo long block for a fair deal and is trustworthy for there quality of products, Imay eentertain that route.

Picking up a 2.4 from a u pull it or a local service yard is not something I would like to do. Very questionable history, which is the reason for this post.
Plus the cost for a junk yard engine isnt really economically logical once you factor in other areas needed to make it happen.

Any suggestions?

Talk to some of your local Volvo shops, they might know someone. I agree, I'd rather have someone who is experienced with Volvos working on my block than someone who works with SRT-4s.

Is the norm still to go with a clearwater head? Are all the castings the same ( #'s ? ) for the 2.4 and 2.3 that span from 1992 thru 1997?

Thanks for the reply bmd!

I was thinking of going the Clearwater head route as well but some of the online reviews are less than kind.

I wound up calling the Stealer and a BMW specialist I know to find out which machine shops they recommend.

I did run across a 2.3 crate motor. Didn't state if it was a na or fi config. Year range was showing 93-96. Didn't certain years have slight changes especially if na?

2.3 is hpt only, which is 94-on only. The 93 was NA only. Every NA 93-98 is a 2.4; for sure you don't want an NA engine.

Any 2.3 block 94-98 will work, you can just bolt on everything from your 2.4. But you will want to also change to the injectors, turbo (hpt 15g or 16t) and ECU from the 2.3. The 2.3 with lpt is a dog.

Going to a 2.3 bare block, I'd agree with it being similar. The rotating assembly loaded into the block dictates a lot of what to expect with the performance characteristics. A standard rebuild using ARP hardware and where applicable, reconditioning the crank, rods and repurposing the pistons from a 2.4 would be the path taken.

I may go find a good full 2.4 LPT engine, check it over, do as needed then put on a new head.

Now to source a good 2.4 LPT engine. ?? :?:

Maybe a Volvo-specific salvage yard, that has records on their cars/engines? Otherwise, eBay or one of those used engine websites, if you're looking for a complete 2.4 LPT engine.

It depends on your location. If you search around, there may be a place in your area that parts out Volvos or European cars, in general. Or online at a website like this: http://www.engineandtransmissionworld.com/index.php
